Fried Chicken Schnitzels in the Italian way

  • Italian-inspired fried chicken schnitzels are a delightful twist on the classic schnitzel, incorporating the rich flavors and culinary traditions of Italy. This dish combines the crispy, golden exterior of a traditional schnitzel with the aromatic herbs and spices that are synonymous with Italian cuisine, resulting in a dish that is both familiar and exotic.

Ingredients
  • To create these flavorful schnitzels, you will need boneless chicken breasts, which are tenderized and pounded to an even thickness. This step is crucial, as it ensures that the chicken cooks evenly and remains juicy. The chicken is then marinated in a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, and a blend of Italian herbs such as oregano, basil, and thyme. This marinade not only imparts a zesty flavor but also helps to tenderize the meat further. The breading process is where the Italian influence truly shines. Instead of the typical breadcrumbs, a mixture of seasoned breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese is used. The Parmesan adds a nutty, salty flavor that enhances the overall taste of the schnitzel. For added texture, you can incorporate crushed cornflakes or panko breadcrumbs, which will create an extra crispy coating when fried.

Cooking Method
  • Once the chicken is marinated and breaded, it is time to cook the schnitzels. They can be shallow-fried in a generous amount of olive oil, which not only adds flavor but also helps achieve that coveted golden-brown color. Frying should be done over medium heat to ensure that the chicken cooks through without burning the exterior. Each side typically takes about 3 to 4 minutes, depending on the thickness of the chicken.Alternatively, for a healthier version, the schnitzels can be baked in the oven. After breading, place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and lightly spray or brush them with olive oil. Baking at a high temperature will help achieve a crispy texture while keeping the chicken moist inside.

Serving Suggestions
  • Italian-inspired fried chicken schnitzels can be served in various ways. For a classic approach, serve them with a side of marinara sauce for dipping, enhancing the Italian theme. A fresh arugula salad drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette complements the richness of the schnitzels beautifully. Additionally, pairing them with roasted vegetables or a side of creamy polenta can create a well-rounded meal. For a more casual presentation, consider making a schnitzel sandwich. Place the fried chicken schnitzel on a crusty Italian roll, topped with fresh mozzarella, arugula, and a drizzle of pesto or aioli. This not only elevates the dish but also makes it a perfect option for lunch or a picnic.

Conclusion
  • In conclusion, Italian-inspired fried chicken schnitzels are a fusion dish that brings together the best of both worlds—crispy fried chicken and the vibrant flavors of Italy. Whether enjoyed on their own, paired with sides, or transformed into a sandwich, these schnitzels are sure to impress at any meal. Their versatility allows for creativity in presentation and serving, making them a delightful addition to any culinary repertoire.
