Delicious Soft Strudels with Walnuts and Figs

  • Indulge in the delightful experience of enjoying delicious soft strudels filled with a rich combination of walnuts and figs. These pastries are not only scrumptious but also incredibly easy to prepare, making them a perfect choice for both novice bakers and seasoned chefs looking for a quick yet impressive dessert option.

Ingredients

To create these mouthwatering strudels, you will need a few key ingredients that come together to form a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. The primary components include:

- Strudel Dough: You can either make your own from scratch or use store-bought phyllo dough for convenience. The dough should be thin and pliable, allowing for a light and flaky texture once baked.

- Walnuts: Freshly chopped walnuts add a delightful crunch and a rich, nutty flavor that complements the sweetness of the figs perfectly.

- Figs: Dried figs, chopped into small pieces, provide natural sweetness and a chewy texture that contrasts beautifully with the crispness of the dough.

- Sugar and Spices: A sprinkle of sugar enhances the sweetness of the filling, while spices like cinnamon or nutmeg can add warmth and depth to the overall flavor profile.

- Butter: Melted butter brushed over the dough before baking ensures a golden, crispy exterior that is simply irresistible.

Preparation Steps

1. Prepare the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped walnuts and figs with sugar and your chosen spices. Ensure the mixture is well combined to allow the flavors to meld together beautifully.

2. Roll Out the Dough: If you are using phyllo dough, lay out a sheet and brush it lightly with melted butter. Layer several sheets together for a sturdier base, repeating the buttering process between each layer.

3. Assemble the Strudels: Spoon the walnut and fig mixture along one edge of the dough, leaving a margin at the sides. Carefully roll the dough over the filling, tucking in the edges as you go to create a secure seal.

4. Bake to Perfection: Place the rolled strudels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with more melted butter for that golden finish. Bake in a preheated oven until they are puffed and golden brown, filling your kitchen with an enticing aroma.

Serving Suggestions

  • Once baked, allow the strudels to cool slightly before slicing them into generous portions. They can be served warm or at room temperature, making them versatile for any occasion. For an added touch, dust the tops with powdered sugar or serve alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Conclusion

  • These soft strudels with walnuts and figs are not only easy to prepare but also deliver a delightful taste experience that will impress your family and friends. The combination of crunchy nuts and sweet figs wrapped in flaky pastry is sure to become a favorite in your dessert repertoire. Follow this recipe, and enjoy the process of creating a treat that is as pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate.

Strudels with Figs and Walnuts
Preparation:

Filling:

  1. Immerse the dried figs in water for 10-15 minutes. Afterward, strain them and place half of the walnuts and figs in a blender to blend coarsely, repeating the process twice.

  2. Once blended, combine everything in a single bowl, add 1 tablespoon of sugar, stir thoroughly, and set aside.

Dough:

  1. Prepare the dough by combining butter and sugar, then incorporate two eggs, one egg yolk, vanilla sugar, lemon zest, and a pinch of salt. Mix thoroughly with a mixer until the mixture is smooth and lump-free. Gradually add flour, continuing to mix until well combined.

  2. Shape the dough with your hands until it is smooth and compact, resembling tart dough in consistency.

  3. Once prepared, cover the dough with plastic wrap and allow it to rest in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.

Processing:

  1. Once the time has elapsed, take half of the dough and place it on a work surface lined with parchment paper. Cover the dough with another sheet of parchment paper. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to a thickness of 5 mm, ensuring it forms a rectangular shape.

  2. Spread half of the fig and walnut mixture over the parchment paper, aligning the length of the filling with the longer side of the rectangle.

  3. Remove the parchment paper.

  4. Trim the edges of the dough with a knife, incorporating any excess into the remaining half of the dough.

  5. Place the filling onto the dough and roll it three times, then trim any excess dough for use in the second roll.

  6. Roll the dough into a thin, long roll on the work surface, achieving a thickness of 2.5 - 3.0 cm. This should yield approximately 9-10 smaller strudels. Use a fork to create decorative impressions.

  7. Slightly flatten each strudel.

  8. Cut the strudels into smaller pieces, approximately 6-7 cm in length.

  9. Arrange the sliced strudels on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

  10. Repeat this process with the remaining dough and filling until all materials are used.

  11. Bake the strudels in a preheated oven at 180°C for approximately 15 minutes, adjusting for your specific oven.

  12. Once the strudels are baked, remove them from the oven.

  13. Dust with powdered sugar once they have slightly cooled.

Buon appetito!
