Updated: Mar 11

  • Poppy seed strudel is a traditional Vojvodina ( Serbia) dessert, a cake that everyone loves, one of my favorite desserts. It can also be made next to poppies with walnuts and the addition of raisins, and carob is one of the healthiest foods that is rich in minerals and vitamins. Follow recipe.

Ingredients: 2 strudels, cup 200 ml. simple, total time: 120 min.
  • 600 g poppy seeds

  • 100 g of raisins

  • 700-800 g of flour

  • 1 cube of yeast/ 42 g

  • 300 ml of milk

  • 1 whole egg

  • 2 egg yolks

  • grated 1 lemon peel

  • 100 ml oil

  • 1 teaspoon salt

* For the Dough: 4–5 Tablespoons of sugar

* For the Poppy seeds Filling: 6 Tablespoons of sugar and 170 ml milk

Preparation:

Dough:

  1. Stir the yeast in a little milk, add a 1 teaspoon of sugar,1 teaspoon of flour. Leave on warm to let the yeast rise for 15 min.

  2. Whisk the egg yolks with 4 tablespoons of sugar, then add oil, a little salt, then gradually add flour and yeast with milk which has risen.

  3. Knead a soft dough and leave it in a warm place to rest and rise for 40 min.

For the Filling:

  1. Heat a cup of milk well, add 6 tablespoons of sugar, 600 g of poppy seeds and stir on the fire for a few minutes. Add the washed raisins. Stir in the filling, cook well for a few more minutes, then remove from the heat.

  2. Make two crusts from the dough, roll them with a rolling pin to a thickness of 1 cm, then coat them with a filling, wrap them in a roll. Close the ends tightly so that the filling does not leak out.

  3. Leave them in the baking tray (use paper to prevent them from sticking). Let them stand for 30 min.

  4. Before baking, coat them with egg yolk. Bake for 40 minutes on a moderate heat of 160 °C. If your oven works harder, put it on the fan option or cover it tightly with aluminum foil.

  5. Leave the finished strudel covered with a clean cloth to cool.

  6. You can sprinkle with powdered sugar if you want. Serve warm or cold.

Buon appetito!
