This Pier fish is not only a staple in the culinary landscape of Friuli Venezia Giulia, but it is also a beloved dish that reflects the region's rich maritime heritage. The preparation of this fish is famously simple and quick, making it an ideal choice for both busy weeknights and leisurely weekend meals.
Story about Pier fish
In the picturesque city of Trieste, located at the crossroads of Italian, Slovenian, and Austrian cultures, the locals have perfected a straightforward method of cooking this fish that allows its natural flavors to shine through.
Preparation and Ingredients
To prepare the Pier fish, you will only need a few basic ingredients: salt, flour, and oil. The process typically involves cleaning the fish thoroughly, then lightly coating it in flour mixed with a pinch of salt before frying it in hot oil until it achieves a golden-brown crust. This method not only enhances the flavor but also creates a delightful texture that is crispy on the outside while remaining tender and juicy on the inside.
For those looking to elevate the dish further, I have found that seasoning the fish with dry Vegeta seasoning adds an extra layer of flavor that many find irresistible. This seasoning blend, while optional, brings a depth of taste that complements the fish beautifully, enhancing its natural qualities without overwhelming them.
Serving Suggestions
To accompany the Pier fish, I also prepared a refreshing marinade that can be served on the side or drizzled over the fish just before serving. The marinade is simple yet flavorful, requiring only a few ingredients: 80 ml of high-quality olive oil, two tablespoons of finely chopped fresh parsley, the juice of one slice of lemon, a pinch of salt, a dash of pepper, and two cloves of finely chopped onion. This combination not only adds brightness and acidity to the dish but also infuses it with aromatic herbs and spices that enhance the overall dining experience.
Conclusion
The Pier fish is not only delicious but also packed with nutrients, making it a healthy option for lunch or dinner. Its versatility allows it to be served with a variety of side dishes, such as a fresh salad, roasted vegetables, or even a light pasta, making it suitable for any occasion. Whether you are entertaining guests or enjoying a quiet meal at home, this dish is sure to impress with its simplicity, flavor, and health benefits.

NOTE:
You can also grill this fish, then make only a few cuts on one side and the other, it will be tastier and well-cooked if you like it crispy, this also applies to baking in the oven. Bake at 190°C for 20 minutes, then turn them over and bake for another 15-17 minutes. Drizzle them with a little olive oil.
Keep the rest of the food in the refrigerator for up to 1 day, covered.
