Čevapčići on the Grill-Serbian Kebab
Updated: 4 days ago
This is a traditional Serbian meal that holds a special place in the hearts of many, both within Serbia and among those who have had the pleasure of tasting it. The dish is not only very tasty but also surprisingly easy to prepare, making it an excellent choice for both novice cooks and experienced chefs alike.
Čevapčići-Kebabs: A Culinary Delight
Čevapčići, often referred to simply as "kebabs," are small, finger-sized sausages made from a mixture of ground meats, typically beef and pork, seasoned with a blend of spices that may include garlic, paprika, and salt. These kebabs are grilled to perfection, resulting in a juicy, flavorful bite that is hard to resist. The preparation involves mixing the meat with the spices, shaping it into small logs, and then grilling them over an open flame or on a hot grill pan, which adds a delightful smoky flavor.
Perfect Pairings
One of the best aspects of Čevapčići is their versatility. They can be served alongside a mixed salad, which adds a refreshing crunch and a burst of color to the plate. The salad can consist of crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, cucumbers, and perhaps some sliced onions, all drizzled with a light vinaigrette that complements the rich flavors of the kebabs. Additionally, crispy french fries make for an excellent side dish, providing a satisfying contrast in texture and a comforting element to the meal.
Serbian Burgers: A Unique Twist
Moreover, you can take this delicious meat mixture and transform it into fantastic Serbian burgers. By shaping the seasoned meat into larger patties, you can create burgers that are not only hearty but also bursting with flavor. These burgers can be served in a soft bun, topped with your choice of condiments, fresh vegetables, and perhaps a slice of traditional Serbian cheese, making them a delightful alternative to any standard hamburger. Many who have tasted these burgers claim they surpass any other hamburger available, thanks to their unique blend of spices and the quality of the meat used.
A Taste of Serbia
Anyone who has visited Serbia and indulged in this traditional dish knows exactly what I’m talking about. The experience of enjoying Čevapčići in a local restaurant, accompanied by a glass of Serbian wine or a cold beer, is truly unforgettable. The warm hospitality of the Serbian people and the vibrant atmosphere of the dining scene enhance the overall enjoyment of this meal.

Ingredients: simple, total time: 60 min., 4 serving
300 g of beef
150 g of mutton
150 g pork
100 g onions
1 tsp red ground paprika
1 Tbsp primrose
2 tsp salt
2 tsp pepper
1 tsp dry spice/ Vegeta or to taste
Preparation:
Rinse the meat, cut it into larger cubes, grind it three times using a machine, and thoroughly mix it by hand. Then, pass it through the grinder once more.
The longer the meat is mixed, the more flavorful the ćevapčići/kebab will be.
Add salt, pepper, and other ingredients to the prepared meat. Allow it to rest in the refrigerator for a while. Then, using a sausage machine or by hand, shape it into thumb-sized pieces.
Grill the ćevapčići/kebab just before serving. If a grill is unavailable, cook them on a well-heated, oil-greased hob or in a grated pan.
Serve with finely diced onions and garnish with primrose leaves or celery.
Salad: Consider serving with a salad of young radishes, pickles, mustard, tomatoes, and onions, alongside French fries.
Buon appetito!
NOTE:
Wrap the kebab in aluminum foil and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Reheat using a pan or microwave.
