Easter Bread
Updated: 3 days ago
Easter bread is a delightful and traditional baked good that holds a special place in many cultures, particularly during the festive season of Easter. This bread is not only easy to make but also boasts a texture that is soft as a soul, making it a comforting treat for family and friends. Its appearance is equally captivating, often adorned with intricate braids, colorful egg decorations, or a glossy glaze that adds to its visual appeal.
Ingredients and Preparation
To embark on the journey of making this beautiful Easter bread, you will need a few simple ingredients that are commonly found in most kitchens. The basic recipe typically includes flour, sugar, yeast, salt, eggs, milk, and butter. Each ingredient plays a crucial role in developing the bread's tender crumb and rich flavor.
1. Flour: All-purpose flour is commonly used, but bread flour can also be utilized for a chewier texture.
2. Yeast: Active dry yeast or instant yeast will help the bread rise, creating that light and airy quality.
3. Sugar: This not only sweetens the bread but also helps to activate the yeast and contributes to the browning of the crust.
4. Salt: Essential for flavor, salt also strengthens the dough's structure.
5. Eggs: Adding eggs enriches the dough, giving it a beautiful color and contributing to its softness.
6. Milk: Warm milk is often used to dissolve the yeast and enhance the overall richness of the bread.
7. Butter: Melted butter adds moisture and flavor, resulting in a tender crumb.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Mixing the Dough
Begin by gently warming the milk and dissolving the yeast in it, allowing it to activate and become frothy. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the yeast mixture, along with beaten eggs and melted butter. Stir until the dough begins to come together.
Kneading the Dough
Once the mixture is combined, transfer it to a floured surface and knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes. This process develops the gluten, which is essential for the bread's structure. The dough should become smooth and elastic. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour, but be cautious not to overdo it, as too much flour can lead to a dense loaf.
First Rise
Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm area until it has doubled in size. This typically takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the temperature of your kitchen.
Shaping the Bread
After the first rise, punch down the dough to release any air bubbles. Divide the dough into equal portions, which can be braided or shaped into a round loaf. If you choose to braid, roll each piece into long strands and braid them together, securing the ends. For a round loaf, shape the dough into a ball and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Second Rise
Cover the shaped dough again and allow it to rise for another 30 to 60 minutes. This second rise is crucial for achieving that fluffy texture.
Baking
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Before baking, you can brush the top of the bread with an egg wash made from beaten egg and water for a beautiful golden finish. Bake the bread for about 25 to 30 minutes, or until it is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Cooling and Decorating
Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. For an added festive touch, consider decorating your Easter bread with colorful dyed eggs nestled into the braids or drizzling a simple icing made from powdered sugar and milk over the top.
Conclusion
Easter bread is not just a treat; it’s a celebration of the season, symbolizing new beginnings and the joy of gathering with loved ones. Its soft texture and beautiful presentation make it a centerpiece for any Easter brunch or dinner, inviting everyone to take part in the tradition of sharing and enjoying this beloved baked good.
Ingredients: mold measuring 24 cm round, simple, total time: 135 min.
Dough:
40 g yeast
500 g of flour
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
50 ml of oil
1 tablespoon sour milk
100 ml of lukewarm milk
150 ml of yogurt
For Coating:
about 50 g of margarine or butter
1 egg
Preparation:
In a large bowl, combine lukewarm milk, yeast, and sugar, mixing by hand. If the dough is too firm and compact, knead it lightly by hand, dusting the work surface with a little flour, and roll out the dough.
Shape the dough into a ball, lightly oil a bowl, and allow the dough to rise for 30–40 minutes.
Once the dough has risen, place it on a lightly floured work surface and shape it into a loaf. Divide it into three equal portions and form each into a ball. Take one ball and roll it out into a rectangular shape, approximately 3-4 mm thick. Spread butter evenly over the entire surface of the dough.
Roll the dough into a smaller, thinner roll. Repeat this process with the remaining two dough balls using the same method.
After completing this step, gently stretch each of the thin rolls to prepare the dough for bread making.
Arrange the rolls and weave them into a bread shape. Place them in a deep, round mold lined with 24 cm baking paper, joining the ends. Brush with egg, sprinkle with cumin and sesame seeds, and let the dough rest for 20 minutes before baking.
Bake at 180°C for 40 minutes.
Enjoy in bites!
