Monastery Donuts, Simple Recipe

Updated: Mar 9

  • This is one of the recipes of how our Serbian monks prepare donuts, an old recipe that I pulled out of some magazines. The preparation is very easy and simple, you will enjoy the bites. Follow the recipe.

Ingredients: simple, total time: 90 min
  • 500 g flour

  • 2 eggs

  • a cube of fresh yeast/ 42 g

  • 100 ml oil

  • 300 ml milk

  • 2 teaspoons sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • grated lemon or orange peel

  • 1 bag vanilla sugar/ 10 g

  • powdered sugar for sprinkling

Preparation:
  1. Put the flour in a deeper bowl, add eggs, oil, milk with sugar, vanilla sugar, grated orange peel, and crushed yeast. Mix it all well and make a soft dough. If it is too thin, add a little flour, if it is hard, add a little milk. The dough should be separated from the walls of the bowl and not stick to your fingers.

  2. Then cover the bowl with the cloth with a cloth and let it stand for 45 minutes, so that the dough rises.

  3. When the dough has arrived, lower it to a floured work surface and divide it into 2 parts. Separate one part with a rolling pin and take out the donut circles with a mold or a glass. Do the same with the other half.

  4. When you have made all the donuts, cover them with a cloth and let them stand for another 15 minutes, on floured surfaces so that they do not stick.

  5. Pour a larger amount of oil into a deeper pan and wait for the oil to heat up well. Fry the donuts at a medium temperature. Just a few minutes on both sides and place them on a plate with a napkin, sprinkle with powdered sugar and vanilla sugar that you have mixed, or eat them with jam or Nutella.

Buon appetito!
